1986 Roadside Men, Yunnan Province

Roadside group of men with bicycles in Yunnan, 1986.

Made in 1986 along a rural roadside in Yunnan Province, this photograph captures a large group of men who paused from their day to see what was happening as I passed with my camera. Many stand with their bicycles—still the dominant mode of transportation in most of China at the time—while others gather tightly behind them, forming an impromptu portrait of a community on the cusp of change. Their expressions range from warm curiosity to quiet reserve.

The bicycles, clothing, and unpaved surroundings reflect the realities of daily life in the mid-1980s, before China’s rapid modernization transformed its landscapes and rhythms of movement. The soft contrast of the midday light reveals every face and gesture, giving the scene both documentary clarity and a fine-art stillness. This photograph preserves a moment when rural China was still defined by bicycles, work clothes, and the shared experience of looking toward an uncertain but accelerating future.
