2002 Toilet and Chair — Mural Artist Studio, Shanghai

In 2003, a mural artist’s studio in Shanghai presents a carefully staged composition: a toilet painted with a fishbowl motif is placed before a mural depicting a classical statue and an open door. The objects are arranged deliberately rather than incidentally.

I added a wooden chair to echo the photograph titled “2000 Ming Chairs, Zhujiajiao,” creating a visual link between the two images. Together, the toilet and chair transform ordinary fixtures into an elegant pairing, bringing humor, reference, and coherence to the two works.
