1993 Park Hotel - People's Square on the left, Shanghai

In 1993, individuals were observed standing, walking, and pausing along a tree-lined public boundary in the heart of Shanghai. The parkland of People’s Square lies on the opposite side of the trees to the left, while this side functions as a transitional zone between open space and the adjacent urban environment.

The Park Hotel, completed in 1934 and once the tallest building in Asia, rises prominently in the background. The photograph juxtaposes routine public activity with one of Shanghai’s most iconic pre-war landmarks, linking daily life to the city’s layered architectural history.
