1987 Nuns, Sanjiang

These four nuns were photographed inside their residence in Sanjiang in 1987. Before the photograph, they began taking items off the wall: robes, buckets, tools, thinking the room should appear cleaner. I asked them to leave everything as it was.

Their belongings reveal the daily rhythms of monastic life: practical, modest, and grounded in shared space. The combination of personal items and devotional objects offers a more complete picture of their lived environment than a tidied room could.

This image represents an authentic record of monastic domestic life among the Dong minority.
